Subclinical inflammation, telomere shortening, homocysteine, vitamin B6, and mortality: the Ludwigshafen Risk and Cardiovascular Health Study

Pusceddu I, Herrmann W, Kleber ME, Scharnagl H, Hoffmann MM, Winklhofer-Roob BM, März W, Herrmann M

Homocysteine (HCY) and vitamin B6 were examined as predictors of mortality in LURIC participants over a median 9.9-year follow-up. The highest versus lowest HCY quartile yielded all-cause and cardiovascular mortality hazard ratios of 2.77 and 2.78; the corresponding ratios for the highest vitamin B6 quartile were 0.41 and 0.40. HCY was an independent negative predictor of relative telomere length, implying that inflammation-driven telomere shortening may partly mediate excess mortality.
