Among 2,457 LURIC patients followed for a median of 9.9 years, the association between plasma aldosterone concentration and cardiovascular mortality depended significantly on galectin-3 levels (interaction p = 0.021). Aldosterone was associated with CV mortality only in patients above the median galectin-3 value (HR per 1 SD = 1.14, 95% CI 1.01-1.30, p = 0.023), but not below it. These findings suggest galectin-3 acts as an intermediary between aldosterone and adverse cardiovascular outcomes.
