Cholesterol efflux capacity was measured in 2,468 LURIC participants to examine its associations with cardiovascular biomarkers and long-term mortality (median follow-up 9.9 years). Efflux correlated positively with HDL markers and inversely with CRP, fibrinogen, IL-6, and serum amyloid A; cardiovascular mortality was elevated in the lowest efflux quartile. This association remained after adjustment for HDL cholesterol, supporting cholesterol efflux as an independent predictor of cardiovascular mortality.
