A mitochondrial genome-wide association study of nuclear DNA methylation (DNAm) was performed using the Young Finns Study (n = 926) as discovery and LURIC (n = 2317) as a replication cohort. Of 27 nominally replicated associations (P < 0.05), a joint meta-analysis identified 19 DNAm sites associated with mtDNA variants and four with haplogroup associations. The results support mitochondrial genetic control of nuclear DNAm, though further validation is needed.
