Genome-wide DNA methylation was compared between East- and West-originating Finns (Young Finns Study, n = 969), identifying 21 differentially methylated loci (FDR < 0.05; delta-beta > 2.5%) linked to cardiometabolic traits. Replication in LURIC (n = 2371) confirmed associations of cg26740318 and DMR_11p15 with diabetes phenotypes and DMR_22q13 with triglyceride levels, indicating that epigenetic variation may mediate the cardiometabolic disease discrepancy between Finnish sub-populations.
