In 3,201 LURIC patients referred for coronary angiography, elevated parathyroid hormone (PTH) was associated with prevalent atrial fibrillation (AF) in multivariable analysis (OR 3.96, 95% CI 2.32-6.76, p < 0.001). The association persisted after adjustment for mineral metabolism, kidney function, and invasive hemodynamic parameters (OR 2.32, p = 0.009), suggesting PTH is an independent correlate of AF rather than a surrogate of cardiac dysfunction.
